Paul Revere

Patriot. Silversmith. American Icon.

Paul Revere, the great patriot, also stood as America's unparalleled silversmith. He was uniquely capable of executing every stage from raw silver to engraved masterpiece. This extraordinary pre-Revolutionary War coffee pot is one of just six armorial coffee pots Revere ever created, exemplifying his highest craftsmanship.

This exceptional coffee pot was crafted circa 1775 amid rising colonial tensions, when punitive tea taxation shifted patriotic Americans toward coffee consumption. Such magnificent silver vessels remained accessible only to the most affluent colonists, and this one bears the monogram of Dr. M. Sawyer (1737-1815), a prominent Massachusetts physician.

Artisan Insights

— Auction Record —
Any piece of Paul Revere silver is rare, with most surviving examples being small. Last year's auctions featured only two Revere II pieces totaling 4.4 oz — merely 10% of this substantial coffee pot's weight. In 2012, a pair of his serving spoons sold for $104,500.

— Institutional Importance —
Museums and private collectors vie for Revere silver, with the highest quality pieces often acquired by the most prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

 — Rare Form —
Of the six armorial coffee pots Paul Revere created, most are held in museums—the Worcester Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This example was exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for over 30 years.
